Social Recruiting 101: Foundational Tips for Optimizing Your Social Channels

So, your organization has decided to join the world of social recruiting? Welcome! You’re about to learn a lot of exciting new information that you can use. But a word of caution—social recruiting can be overwhelming at first. Just take it one step at a time and remember where you started from. From defining your authentic culture and developing a strong employee value proposition to establishing a consistent and authentic recruitment message, you’ve learned so much already. Remember it’s been a long road to get here, but your education is just beginning.

Ensuring that your recruitment marketing integrates fully through all of your digital platforms is another huge undertaking. But it does not take away from its importance in today’s war for talent. According to Glassdoor, 79% of job seekers are likely to use social media in their search. The good news is that not many of your competitors have probably figured this out yet either—nearly three in four employees say their employer does not promote, or even know how to promote, an employment brand on social media.

Where do you start?

Part of recruiting successfully on social is doing research beforehand to determine what channels make sense for your organization and your talent community—not every channel is appropriate for every organization. Researching where your existing employees are active may be a good starting point, and help you develop a strong employee ambassador program. After all, research indicates that social shares by employees have eight times more impact than shares by organizations.

Completing research will not only help determine the right channels for you, but may help generate some ideas on the type of content and strategies to use. For example, research from the Pew Research Center indicates that 70% of Facebook users check their account on a daily basis. This is in contrast to only 13 percent of LinkedIn users who regularly check their account. Using this type of insight could help you determine where to primarily focus your efforts and inform how frequently to post.
